NEXT STEPS KNITTING WORKSHOP: Using Circular Needles - Make a Chunky Wool Cowl (all materials included)

Does the thought of using circular needles leave you feeling a little flat? Are you mystified by them? Convinced they're difficult to use? Let Nicky Jerrome, owner of All About The Yarn, ease those concerns and introduce you to the wonder of circular needles by helping you get started on a lovely warm, woolly cowl during this three hour class.

We'll start off using our circular needles to knit back and forth (knit flat). Once you've got a feel for them and seen how they work for flat knitting, we'll join our work to start knitting "in the round" and carry on our cowl as a tube.

We will cover:

  • Using a stretchy cast on (German Twisted Cast On)
  • Knitting flat (back and forth) on circular needles
  • Joining your work "in the round"
  • Knitting garter stitch in the round
  • Knitting stocking stitch in the round
  • Joining new colours and knitting stripes in the round
  • Using a stretchy bind off (Demonstration of Jeny's Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off)
  • How to block your work

By the end of the course you'll have all the skills you need to finish your cowl at home. You'll be given links to videos to use after the course that cover the techniques we've used so that you can refresh your memory if needed.

Tea, coffee, cake/biscuits and plenty of encouragement are provided.

Skills required: Confident beginner (or circular needle-averse expert): You need to be confident with cast on, cast off and the knit and purl stitches.

Materials Included: KnitPro wooden circular needles and 2 x 50g balls of BC Garn Hamelton Tweed Organic chunky yarn. A pattern is provided for you to take home so you can carry on and finish your cowl after the course.

Homework prior to the course: None

Follow-on CourseYou may also be interested in our follow on workshop later on in the day, where you can make a pair of matching fingerless mitts using the "Magic Loop" technique - a method for knitting a small circumference in the round using long circular needles. An opportunity to really grow your circular knitting needles confidence! Bookings for both classes will automatically receive a £10.00 discount (bring a packed lunch for the break).

Our teaching studio and yarn shop is located at Chesterblade Hills, set in the beautiful Somerset countryside in the hamlet of Chesterblade between Frome and Shepton Mallet.
