Does the merest mention of magic loop give you the collywobbles? Let Nicky Jerrome, owner of All About The Yarn, ease your concerns and introduce you to the wonder of magic loop by helping you get started on a lovely warm, woolly pair of fingerless mitts during this three hour class.
Magic loop is a useful technique for knitting small circumferences in the round such as socks, sleeves, toys, and closing the crowns of hats. It is an alternative to double pointed needles and if you already have long circular needles in your collection it means you can get more use out of your needles.
I strongly recommend that you have familiarised yourself with circular needles and knitting in the round before this workshop. These mitts are in the same yarn used for the cowl we make in the Introduction to Circular Needles workshop so if you do both classes, you can make a matching set!
By the end of the course you'll have all the skills you need to finish your mitts at home.
We will cover:
- Using a stretchy cast-on (German Twisted Cast On)
- Joining your work "in the round" using the magic loop technique
- Increasing for a thumb gusset
- Leaving stitches on hold
- Picking up stitches
- Using a stretchy bind off (Jeny's Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off)
- How to block your work
Tea, coffee, cake/biscuits and plenty of encouragement are provided.
Skills required: Confident beginner (or magic loop-averse expert): You need to be confident with cast on, cast off, knit and purl stitches and increasing/decreasing. You also need to be familiar with knitting in the round.
Materials Included: KnitPro wooden circular needles and 50g of BC Garn Hamelton Tweed Organic yarn. A pattern is provided for you to take home so you can carry on and finish your pair of mitts after the course.
You'll be given links to videos after the course that cover the techniques we've used so that you can refresh your memory if needed.
Homework prior to the course: None
