Next Steps Knitting: Toe-Up Socks Workshop (materials included)
We will be making a mini toe-up sock over the course of the day with 4-ply yarn.
Toe-up socks are great because you can try them on as you go for a good fit in the foot and you can easily end your first sock half way through your 100g ball of sock yarn taking the guess work out of how long they should be!
It just so happens, as we head into the festive season, that these little mini socks make perfect little Christmas stockings for tree decorations, or make several and make a mini-stocking garland! You can even pop little treats in them - make 24 and embroider the numbers on them for an heirloom advent calendar.
You will learn:
• How to cast on for toe-up socks with "Judy's Magic Cast-On"
• Knit in the round using magic loop
• Make a short-row heel
• Binding off with "Jeny's surprisingly stretchy bind-off"
The cost of the workshop includes an 80cm long Circular Needle (for magic loop) and a 100g ball of 4-ply sock wool (we'll only need a bit of the yarn on the day so you'll have plenty left to make an adult sized pair of socks after the course).
Tea/coffee and biscuits will be provided. We will lay on snacks but please bring your own lunch.
Skills required: Confident novice - intermediate: You should be confident with knit and purl stitch, have experience of decreases and be familiar with the principle of knitting a small circumference in the round.
Materials Included: 2.5mm/80cm circular needles and a 100g ball of 4-ply sock yarn will be provided on the day (you'll have enough left for you to take away and make an adult size pair of socks). If you would prefer to use your own double pointed needles you are very welcome to bring them.
Homework required: An understanding of knitting in the round is required. If you have not tried magic loop technique before, please watch my video tutorial that will be sent to you after you book your place and it would be great if you could have a go at home so you can familiarise yourself with the technique.
It will be possible to make the socks on double pointed needles if you are already familiar with, and prefer, them but the pattern is written as if using magic loop.
Refreshments: Please bring a packed lunch. We will supply hot drinks and snacks on the day.
Venue: Our teaching space is located at Chesterblade Hills, set in the beautiful Somerset countryside between Frome and Shepton Mallet. For more details about Chesterblade, see here. It is worth having a look at our written directions as SatNav can take people on a bit of a scenic route.
